Today let's talk about why most premed students should NOT apply Early Decision to a medical school, and under what specific conditions you should consider it.
Check out http://mappd.com for a premed app that's changing the premed landscape, especially for nontraditional students!
As always on the OldPreMeds Podcast, our question this week is taken from our nontraditional premed forum. (Ask your own questions at http://premedforums.com!)
Our question comes from a 42-year-old career changer premed who is tied to a specific geographical location. This student is planning to apply to two different local MD schools and is considering applying Early Decision to one of them.
Here are some of the topics I touch on:
• Why I hate the way this student is categorizing these medical schools as more or less "competitive" based on median MCAT scores and GPA.
• Why strong ties to the medical school are needed for applying Early Decision.
• Why a location preference does not count as a "strong tie" to that medical school.
• Does applying Early Decision give your application some bonus points with that med school?
• The risks of applying Early Decision to medical school.
• Why most students should NOT apply Early Decision.
• How do medical schools view your grades from many years ago?
• How Mappd could help nontraditional students like this one.
