You don’t improve at what you don’t train.
That’s the core of the Law of Training Specificity — the body adapts specifically to the systems you stress most.
When Leah Zainc, now a senior at Woodland High (CT), began working with Freedom Running Club, one key training gap stood out:
👉 She was already very strong in the anaerobic glycolytic system, but that strength was masking limitations in her aerobic development and race-specific endurance.
So instead of doing more of what she was already good at, we did what adaptation demands.
Over nearly three years, we:
• Safely increased her weekly mileage
• Targeted VO₂ max work to raise her aerobic ceiling
• Maintained tempo efforts for durability
• Preserved her special endurance and speed — without overloading it
The goal wasn’t to slow her down.
It was to make her faster for longer.
And the results?
🏅 7 State Medals
🎟 16 State Berths across XC, indoor, and outdoor
📈 PRs in every distance from 800m to XC 5K
⭐️ Outdoor 3200m: 12:43 ➜ 11:30 — the result we’re most proud of
That’s what happens when training becomes specific, balanced, and patient — and when the long game is played the right way.
If you’re working hard but not seeing progress, there’s likely a specificity gap in your training.
