Reintroducing spotted hyena to Maputo National Park

In collaboration with Mozambique's National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), Peace Parks has, for a decade now, been actively contributing to the revival and rewilding of Maputo National Park. Through intensive restoration and protection activities and the support of committed partners and funders, the park's animal population has grown to over 12,000! 🙌

Dominated by herbivores, Maputo National Park’s warden, Miguel Goncalves, says that “it is the right time to bring in carnivores, top predators."

Building on already strong relationships with Sabie Game Park and the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance, Miguel’s team undertook the bold mission to capture spotted hyena from Sabie Game Park, to be transported and released into Maputo National Park. 🐾

Often misunderstood, these intelligent and unique creatures play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by eating carcasses and helping prevent the spread of disease. They are expert hunters - ‘apex predators’- too, and their numbers have grown as a result. The timing, and geography, of this relocation makes it mutually beneficial to the parks, ensuring ecosystem balance for both. ♻️

"They are very hard to capture, so this exercise will be very challenging for us," says the lead field veterinarian on the project from the Mozambique Wildlife Alliance, Dr. Hugo Pereira.
