The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) marks a landmark reform in India’s criminal procedure framework by replacing the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (CrPC). Enacted as part of comprehensive criminal law reforms, BNSS aims to modernise investigation, inquiry, and trial procedures, ensuring speedy justice, transparency, and accountability within the criminal justice system.
The Sanhita strengthens victim-centric and citizen-focused mechanisms, introduces the use of technology in investigation and trials, mandates time-bound procedures, and enhances safeguards for women, children, and vulnerable groups.
