Japan has recently made headlines with the successful live-fire test of its electromagnetic railgun aboard the test ship Asuka. Capable of firing projectiles at Mach 6 around 2,300 meters per second this advanced weapon is designed for both anti-ship strikes and missile interception. By 2027–2028, Japan plans to deploy anti-ship and air-defense versions, and from 2030, 27 Maya-class destroyers are expected to be equipped with railgun systems.
In addition, Japan is enhancing its long-range strike capability with Tomahawk cruise missiles, GSCR air-to-ground missiles, improved Type-12 anti-ship missiles, and hypersonic missiles. These developments reflect a strategic shift from a defensive posture to proactive maritime capabilities, including light aircraft carriers carrying X35B stealth fighters and far-sea strike groups supported by submarines.
While impressive, the technology still faces challenges such as limited barrel life, high power consumption, and complex system integration. Nonetheless, these advancements provide a glimpse into the future of naval warfare and Japan’s evolving defense strategy.
