Not a lot of people know about Alla Nazimova. A Russian-American actress, director, producer and screenwriter. Alla Nazimova was one of the highest-paid actresses during her time reportedly earning $13,000 a week under contract with Metro Pictures. She founded her own company, Nazimova Productions, and financed and produced daring films like Salomé. She had a mansion on Sunset Blvd known as the Garden of Alla, which, according to sources, became a gathering hub for queer women in Hollywood. Nazimova is popularly credited with the term “Sewing Circle,” which was a clique for lesbian and bisexual women who hid their orientation. Alla Nazimova is truly a trailblazer.
