Punta Prieta, Baja California Sur, Mexico -
We arrived in Punta Prieta hot and tired after four or five days in the desert . The desert was beautiful and at times even mystical in her splender, but after almost a week of heat and no cold water we were ready for a town. Arriving in Punta Prieta, Mariano, Yolanda, Cesar and others dispersed to seek out a place to stay for the night. A townsman offered for us to stay in the multi-purpose hall by the school and even offered to bring us three barrels of cold water to bathe and clean clothes. It was perfect. There is nothing better than dumping a bucket of cold water on your head to bring up your spirits! As we were settling in and making ourselves at home for the evening, the local kids starting creeping up the hill, giggling and shy at first they asked if they could come see what we were doing, ''por supuesto!" we told them to come on in. Excited by their youthful energy Mestra, Diego, and Mariano started engaging them in some capoeira moves. The rest of us came back from buying bananas and joined in the fun. Soon we were teaching in small groups of four or five kids each. They were so hungry to learn capoeira we could barely keep up with them! The boys I was teaching were so into it they kept saying, ''asi asi?!'' Is this it, is this it? As they spun around kicking armadas and meia lua de frentes. The energy in the room was incredible as we were all smiling and laughing. In the morning, I woke up to watch the sunrise and saw two little silhouettes walking in my direction. It was two of the boys and a young girl carrying a large pot of coffee for us. ''Buenos dias. Estamos listos para la classe de capoeira!'' They had gotten permission from their 7 a.m. P.E. teacher to come learn capoeira. Since most of the group wasn't awake yet, Diego, Mariano and I went over to play soccer with them and after the game we invited the whole class and their teacher, Maestra Rocio, to come have a capoeira lesson. Mestra led a dynamic and energy filled class as she always does, followed by a lively roda. I thank the kids from Punta Prieta for their contagious energy and enthusiasm that carried us through the rest of the desert. Axe!
