Īśā vāsyam Upaniṣad
Covered with the Self Upaniṣad
yo'sāvasau puruṣaḥ so'hamasmi
That which IS, That Self, I am That.
īśā vāsyamidaṃ sarvaṃ yatkiñca jagatyāṃ jagat
All this, whatever moves upon the earth, should be covered with that Self.
tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā mā gṛidhaḥ kasyasviddhanam
Protect yourself through such detachment. Do not crave wealth, for whose is it after all?
kurvanneveha karmāṇi jijīviṣecchataṃ samāḥ
Even if you wish to live here for a hundred years, dedicate all your actions to that Self.
evaṃ tvayi nānyatheto'sti na karma lipyate nare
For human beings there is no other way, not to get ensnared by action.
asuryā nāma te lokā andhena tamasā''vṛitāḥ tāṃste pretyābhigacchanti ye ke cātmahano janāḥ
But people who ignore that Self enter those devilish worlds which are covered by blinding delusion.
anejadekaṃ manaso javīyo nainaddevā āpnuvanpūrvamarṣat
The Self is one. Unmoving, It runs ahead faster than the mind; the senses can never reach It.
taddhāvato'nyānatyeti tiṣṭhattasminnapo mātariśvā dadhāti
Immovable, It outruns all other runners. Because of consciousness, the vital force, air, can support all of life’s activities.
tadejati tannaijati taddūre tadvantike
Unmoving, it moves; is far away, yet near.
tadantarasya sarvasya tadu sarvasyāsya bāhyataḥ
It is inside everything, yet outside of all this.
yastu sarvāṇi bhūtānyātmanyevānupaśyati
Whoever sees all beings in himself
sarvabhūteṣu cātmānaṃ tato na vijugupsate
and that Self in all beings, has no wish to despise anything.
yasminsarvāṇi bhūtānyātmaivābhūdvijānataḥ।
On seeing unity, when the Self alone has become all beings, where then is delusion?
tatra ko mohaḥ kaḥ śoka ekatvamanupaśyataḥ
Where is delusion or sorrow for one who is wise?
sa paryagācchukramakāyamavraṇamasnāviraṃ śuddhamapāpaviddham
The Self is all-pervasive, radiant, without a body, without wounds, without sinews, pure, untainted by sin,
kavirmanīṣī paribhūḥ svayambhūryāthātathyato'rthān vyadadhācchāśvatībhyaḥ samābhya
all-seeing, the ruler of the mind, existing everywhere, independent, with a true purpose assigned to every moment in eternity.
pūṣannekarṣe yama sūrya prājāpatyavyūha raśmīn samūha tejaḥ
O Sun, O nourisher, solitary traveller, controller, acquirer, son of the Creator, remove your rays, withdraw your dazzling light.
yatte rūpaṃ kalyāṇatamaṃ tatte paśyāmi
I behold that form of yours, which is most benign.
vāyuranilamamṛitamathedaṃ bhasmāṃtaṃ śarīram
Vital breath, return now to immortal air. Body, turn to ashes.
