Since 1917, First Ladies have served as honorary national presidents of the Girl Scouts of the USA. These distinguished women welcome girls to the White House for events and celebrations, and they reach out to adult volunteers through the media and personal appearances. Girl Scouts from the Washington DC area have long maintained a special relationship with First Ladies, with the White House an easy walk from the local office. Eleanor Roosevelt was even known to pop into a local Girl Scout cafeteria to pick up hot rolls for dinner at the presidential mansion.
