Both players went on to reach the third round of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships.

Fognini broke into the Top 10 for the first time in 2019, becoming the oldest player to break into the Top 10 since the establishment of ATP rankings in 1973. He became the first Italian to win a Masters 1000 title after winning the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 tournament in 2019. He saved five break points when down a set and a break against Andrey Rublev, before recovering to win the match. Fognini then went on to defeat World No.3 Alexander Zverev, World No.13 Borna Ćorić, World No.2 and three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal, and finally Dušan Lajović in the final. Fognini become only the fourth player to defeat Nadal three times on a clay court.

Diego Schwartzman has a career-high ranking of No.11. He reached the quarter-finals at the 2019 US Open, before bowing out to eventual 2019 US Open champion Rafael Nadal.
