Long before medieval walls crowned this rock, the site was a Pictish stronghold known as Dún Foither. Archaeological evidence suggests early settlements on nearby sea stacks like Dunnicaer date back over a thousand years. In 900 AD, the Chronicle of the Kings of Alba records that King Donald II was killed here during a Viking assault, cementing the location’s reputation as a strategic and contested site.

During the Wars of Scottish Independence, Dunnottar became a symbol of resistance. In 1297, a young William Wallace is said to have led forces through a hidden postern gate to reclaim the fortress from English control. The castle’s most famous chapter came during the Great Siege of 1651–1652, when Oliver Cromwell’s army attempted to capture the Scottish crown jewels, known as the “Honors of Scotland.” A small garrison of around 70 defenders held off thousands of Cromwellian troops for eight months. As supplies dwindled, a daring plan unfolded. Christian Fletcher, wife of a local minister, secretly smuggled the crown, sword, and sceptre out of the castle under her clothing and concealed them beneath a church pulpit. Thanks to her bravery, the regalia survived to become national symbols of Scotland.

Walking through Dunnottar today feels like stepping into a medieval epic. Visitors pass through a narrow cliff-edge entrance into a sprawling complex of towers, halls, and vaults. Highlights include the 14th-century Tower House, the intimidating Benholm’s Lodging gatehouse, the grand palace quadrangle with its 120-foot gallery, and the chilling Whigs’ Vault, where Covenanters were imprisoned under brutal conditions in 1685. The site even once housed a pet lion owned by the Earl Marischal, adding to the castle’s legendary aura.
