1976 saw one of the largest bank robberies in the world, with thieves stealing £8m from The Bank of America in Mayfair. The gang were undone by one of their own, Stuart Buckley (the bank's electrician), who was the inside man who learnt the bank vaults combination. He turned informant for a reduced sentence and helped police capture the other gang members
Seven men were found guilty of the crime and sentenced to a combined 100 years in jail with Frank Maple, the alleged leader, escaping the UK and now living in extradition free Morocco. Only £500,000 of the money stolen was ever recovered.
