The 1940's Allis Chalmers Speed Patrol, or Road Maintainer... or what ever else they were called.... was fired up once again to grade the driveway. Pot holes develop in the gravel roadbed just for the heck of it during the winter and if left unworked for the entire season become difficult to traverse at a speed much quicker than a turtle.
Now you can merely fill the pot holes, but with that exercise you will find the potholes simply reappearing in no time. If you have wet and rainy weather after the filling, they will reopen almost immediately and become bigger than ever ! The reason being that most people, especially delivery drivers, make a game of bouncing the packages around in the rear of their vans. To do that they need potholes !! So they come in the driveway at speeds approaching super-sonic. Ok, that's an exaggeration....but damn, they come in past the house like a speed demon !! If there is a hard packed pothole that's refilled with unpacked fill, after a rainshower, you will have a big sump full of wetness that reacts to the elevated speed and force of the rotating masses of the tires and with each shock wave....OUT goes a few rocks. The pothole will be quickly refilled with more oosing water and repeatedly purged of more rocky material/slurry after the delivery is completed....on the outbound trip, which is usually at a higher speed. It couldn't be the growling hounds, the pet wolves in the chicken pen or even me walking around loaded for bear with my 'double barrel shoot twice' hanging in the crook of my arm. Heaven forbid. I think Jeff Bezos needs to hire more country boys, those big city fellas are to skittish.....BUTTTtttt....I digress. The point is, unpacked fill in a pot hole mixed with higher than normal speeds of travel across those unpacked potholes create the recipe for disaster for maintaining a smooth gravel road bed.
SO... how should you do it, you may ask. To do it properly you must attempt to grade and churn the rock ALL to the lowest level of the deepest pothole, grade everything smoothly THEN.....compact it with as heavy of a roller as you can find. This ensures good and reasonably even compaction throughout the whole length and width of the roadway which ultimately results in a much smoother road for a much longer time !!
Ok, the above is entirely an observation that I've come to realize over the years and not copied, stolen or other wise plagiarized from anyones technical publication concerning road building. The concept works for me though your results may vary. #allischalmers, #outdoors, #speedpatrol, #roadgrading, #motorgrading
