Four pre-Victor, pre-Met, and therefore pre-1903 Carusos. Although the dating might be open to controversy, Everest Records, in the liner notes for its reissue on long-play disc 3382, gives the years 1900 and 1901 for these recordings, which are described as the very first that Caruso made; they include both songs and operatic arias.
Numbers 1 through 3 are AICC and Pathe cylinders and discs; 4 is a Zonofono [Zonophone] recording. Each is announced, a custom that cylinders, with no place for a label, necessitated, and was carried over into disc manufacture.
1) 'Tu Non Mi Vuoi Piu Ben', by F. Carbonetti & A. Pini-Corsi;
2) 'E lucevan le stelle', from Tosca, by Puccini;
3) 'Qui sotto it ciel', from Gli Ugonotti [Les Huguenots], by Meyerbeer;
4) 'Un Bacio Ancora', by Rocco Trimarchi.
The visual is Caruso, by Caruso. A caricaturist who enjoyed sketching his friends, Caruso here turned the pen on himself.
