Three night canoe trip from Seagull to Ogishkemuncie. Video starts as we enter Duluth and also includes travel along the Gunflint Trail from Grand Marais up the the Seagull outfitters.
My brother Dave did all the camera work. I (Jim) assembled the clips to make the youtube video. Evan, Chelsea and Dave were in a separate car. They started out a couple hours behind us (Carl, David, and Jim). There is some video of them catching us along the North Shore.
We ended up getting quite a bit of gear from Gustavus Adolphus College. Three tents, all 7 packs, sleeping pads, and one canoe. Dave brought his aluminum canoe, so we only rented one. We had good weather and no significant mishaps. West wind was a challenge working our way across Sea Gull the first day, but we eventually found a spot, way on the other end. Spent the first night there. We were relieved we didn't have to cross the last big stretch of open water on our way to Alpine. Spent the next two nights on Alpine. The third day we did a day-long fishing trip into Ogishkemuncie (via Jasper and Kingfisher). Evan and Chelsea each caught a nice bass. Really didn't have a lot of time to fish, but glad we made it to Ogish. The end of the big burn zone was in Ogish; beautiful trees there. Most of the other areas we were in were burned. Makes it difficult to hang up the packs from bears. But no trouble with bears. The fourth day we headed back to Seagull, so only one portage that last day. I don't think I had even one mosquito bite. Maybe the burn areas have less standing water or something. I wasn't ready to come back!! Wish instead of a four day trip it was six or seven. Nice to spend some time with my boys and nephew and niece. I was pleased to see that my 55 year old body can still take it. We ate well. Saw some beautiful starry nights. The milky way really jumps out at you up there.
