Erbs palsy is damage to a group of nerves running from the neck down into the shoulder area. If those nerves are stretched, torn or traumatized, they can affect the shoulder, biceps and forearm and how they develop over time.

Erbs palsy is typically seen when excessive lateral traction is applied to the baby's head in a life-threatening situation. Let me explain...

During a vaginal delivery as the head is proceeding through the birth canal there are instances where the baby's shoulder becomes stuck under the mother's pelvic bone. This is a life-threatening obstetrical emergency. The doctors call this 'shoulder dystocia'. It simply means that the baby's shoulders are too wide to pass through the mother's pelvis and now the baby is stuck.

There are specific signs and symptoms that trained doctors should be able to recognize when this condition occurs. It is incumbent upon obstetricians and obstetrical nurses to call for help immediately.

Typically, the most senior obstetrician jumps in to help solve this life-threatening problem. There are specific maneuvers that a qualified obstetrician can perform in an attempt to get the baby unstuck. Some of these are measures of last resort and only to be used in extreme cases.

There have been instances where an obstetrician faced with a baby who has shoulder dystocia and is not coming down the birth canal because of its stuck shoulder has attempted to pull on the baby's head in an attempt to get the shoulder unstuck.

The problem with that effort is that it can and has historically produced significantly devastating effects to the nerves leading from the neck to the shoulder and arm.

When excessive traction is applied to the baby's head, it can traumatize, injure, tear or even rip the block of nerves controlling the shoulder and arm. If those nerves are permanently damaged, the baby's arm will wither away and will unlikely be of any use in the future.
