It’s freezing outside.
The sky is clear.
The sun is shining…
so why aren’t your batteries charging properly?
This catches a lot of people out in winter.
On bright but cold days, solar panels can be producing power — yet lithium batteries may deliberately slow down or stop charging. Most of the time, nothing is broken.
In this video, I explain:
Why lithium batteries charge slowly (or not at all) in cold weather
Why sunshine doesn’t equal warm batteries
How the Battery Management System (BMS) protects the cells
Why charging naturally slows down around 80% (even when it’s warm)
Why winter can cause a “double slowdown”
What to check before assuming there’s a fault
This behaviour is very common, especially for batteries installed in garages, sheds, plant rooms, or outbuildings — and for systems without built-in battery heaters.
What to check first:
✔ Battery temperature
✔ State of charge
✔ Where the battery is installed
✔ Whether charging speeds up later in the day
If it’s sunny but charging is slow in winter, it’s usually temperature protection, not a solar or inverter fault.
💬 Not sure if your system is behaving normally?
If you want, drop a comment or message with:
Battery model
Where it’s installed
Approximate temperature
And I’ll tell you if what you’re seeing is expected.
