Subcision is considered one of the most effective techniques for treating atrophic and retracted acne scars.
Dermatological studies show that, when combined with other therapies, such as fillers or laser, subcision can improve the appearance of scars in up to 80% of cases, representing a game-changer in the quest for more even skin tone.
Subcision is indicated for the treatment of deep acne scars by releasing fibrosis in the inner layer of the skin.
A study involving 40 individuals with acne scars investigated the effectiveness of acne scar treatments, such as the subcision procedure.
The subcision procedure demonstrated at least a 50% improvement in acne scars, as observed during patient follow-up. Side effects were minimal, including swelling, bruising, and pain, but were short-lived.
After applying a standard scar removal method, subcision, six-month follow-up data were collected to compare the effectiveness of this specific procedure. Data were obtained from both patients and their physicians to allow for subjective and objective analysis.
The study concluded that scar subcision is a safe, relatively non-invasive, and painless procedure, providing long-lasting results for rolling scars.
Subcision is a minimally invasive dermatologic surgery procedure primarily used to treat atrophic acne scars (those that form depressions or "pits" in the skin).
The procedure works as follows:
Causes of Retracted Scars: Many acne scars are pulled down by fibrous septa (threads of fibrous tissue) that form under the skin.
Subcision Action: The doctor (usually a dermatologist) inserts a special needle with a sharp tip (or blunt-tipped cannula) under the skin in the scar area, using local anesthesia.
Fiber Disruption: Using back-and-forth or circular motions, this needle ruptures (sects) the fibrous strands that are pulling the skin downward.
Collagen Stimulation: The rupture of these fibers and the minor surgical trauma (which generates controlled hematoma) stimulate the formation of new connective tissue (including collagen and elastin) in the area.
Result: The rupture of the strands releases the skin depression, and the newly formed collagen helps fill the depressed area, making the skin surface smoother and more uniform.
Subcision is often indicated for scars that are distensible (they improve when the skin is stretched). Results can be enhanced when combined with other treatments, such as fillers or lasers.
Subcision is often indicated for scars that are *distensible* (they improve when the skin is stretched). Results can be enhanced when combined with other treatments, such as fillers or lasers.
