The X-inactivation center (XIC) is a region on the X chromosome that plays a crucial role in the process of X-inactivation, which is a mechanism used to balance the gene dosage between males and females in mammals.
In females with two X chromosomes, X-inactivation ensures that only one of the X chromosomes in each cell is active while the other is inactivated. This process is random in each cell, meaning that in some cells, the X chromosome inherited from the mother will be inactivated, and in other cells, the one inherited from the father will be inactivated. This process prevents females from having twice the amount of X-linked gene products compared to males, who only have one X chromosome.
