Описание: The tourism industry accounts for about ten percent of the world's gross domestic product and ten percent of all jobs. The Corona crisis, however, brought this key sector of the economy to an abrupt halt. What was the state of tourism before the outbreak of the pandemic? What impact has the pandemic had on tourism and how will it affect the travel of the future?

Maps illustrate the development of the travel industry from the end of the 19th century, when the word "tourist" was invented. In 1869, the British Thomas Cook, the inventor of all-inclusive trips organised the first cruise over the Nile. Over the decades, people became increasingly mobile: with the advent of low-cost flights and all-inclusive offers, travel became more affordable, and even far-flung countries were suddenly accessible.

Today, experts disagree on how travel will continue after the pandemic: some expect fundamental changes - fewer flight bookings and the choice of closer holiday destinations. Others, on the other hand, are sure that people will then be all the more gripped by wanderlust. The question of the international vaccination certificate also plays a central role here. And finally, tourism is also about geopolitical goals: once the crisis is over, China wants to overtake France and become the world's number one tourist destination.
