Hello and welcome to Curious Thought. We all know what dizziness is, I mean, we’ve all had it. You spin around and then fall, feeling dizzy. But why? The answer has to do with your ears, and it’s a lot more interesting than you’d think.
So what gives us our sense of balance in the first place? There are 3 parts of the ear, the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The inner ear is what gives us our sense of balance. In the inner ear, there are hollow tubes filled with fluid and tiny hairs. When our head moves, the fluids move, pulling on the tiny hairs. These hairs then send signals to the brain based on which way they’re being pulled. The brain then sends out the information gathered by the hairs to other organs that need it, such as our eyes.
Now that we know what controls our sense of balance, let’s talk about why we sometimes get dizzy. It comes when a sensory organ and our inner ear hairs send contradictory information to the brain.
For example, when you spin around, the fluids in your ear move around, and the tiny hairs send signals to your brain telling you that you’re spinning. Your eyes also see that you’re spinning, and confirm the signals. The problem comes when you stop. Your eyes tell the brain that you’ve stopped, but, the fluids in your ear takes time to slow down and stop moving. So for the first few seconds when you stop spinning, your inner ear still thinks you are. Contradictory information is sent to the brain, confusing it and making you dizzy.
So, dizziness is really just a confused brain trying to figure out what’s going on.
