At first it is only a wrongness in the water: a pressure that answers her own, a shadow that lags a heartbeat behind her beam. Then something else arranges itself out of those delays — not a shape she can name but a movement that feels deliberate, as if the hull itself had learned to mimic the living. It does not roar or lunge; it waits, patient and slow, like a thing that has been listening for a long time.

Her lungs count the seconds now in a new currency. The regulator’s hiss becomes a metronome; the edges of the world soften and sharpen in the same breath. In the narrowing of her perception, memory and matter begin to trade places: a face she half‑remembers from a photograph seems to hang in the grain of rust; a voice she thinks she hears might be the regulator, might be the wreck, might be the last recording replaying itself in her head. The line between a creature and a mind running thin from lack of air thins with it.

There is an old, animal knowledge that rises in her — the primitive certainty of being watched at the edge of a fire. It is not only fear but a raw, ancestral alertness: the body remembering how to be small and quick and invisible. She feels outrage at whatever took those lives, and a softer, stranger pity for the part of herself that wants to name and fix everything. That pity makes her steady her hands.

She does not know if what follows is real. She reaches for a handhold and the shadow answers with a pressure against her palm, a warmth that could be water or breath. For a moment she thinks of the main story she has been told — of drills that found something under the seabed — and for a moment she thinks of the simpler explanation: hypoxia, the brain stitching ghosts from static. Both explanations sit in her like stones.

She chooses neither explanation aloud. Instead she moves with the same careful cruelty she has used all night: gather, record, leave nothing ambiguous if she can help it. When she touches the thing — if it is a thing — it is less a revelation than a confirmation of the wreck’s temperament: secretive, patient, unwilling to be fully given up. She backs away with a relic clutched to her chest, breath shallow, lamp haloing the dark, carrying with her the sense that the deep keeps company in ways the surface cannot imagine.
