On December 20, 2025, a Cirrus SR22 Turbo experienced a partial power loss that quickly escalated into a forced landing on a busy highway near Springfield, Missouri. In this First Takes accident analysis, we break down what happened, why critical decisions mattered, and the key lessons every Cirrus pilot can learn from this event.
COPA University Dean of Aviation Safety Mark Wadell walks through the known facts from the preliminary NTSB report, including the high turbine inlet temperature warning, the diversion decision, and the rapid loss of options as altitude was given up too early. Using ADS-B data, ATC audio, and training-based analysis, this video highlights how best glide speed, checklist discipline, and early decision-making can dramatically change outcomes during an engine malfunction.
A major focus of this analysis is CAPS decision-making. While road landings may appear tempting under stress, they introduce hidden risks such as power lines, signs, vehicles, and limited margins for error. This accident reinforces why Cirrus training emphasizes setting a CAPS hard deck, slowing to best glide, and deploying CAPS early when a suitable runway cannot be assured.

Why altitude is life during engine emergencies
Common mistakes pilots make during partial power loss scenarios
The importance of magneto checks and checklist adherence
How ATC suggestions should be weighed during emergencies
Why regular CAPS and emergency procedures training saves lives
Fortunately, the pilot and passenger walked away uninjured. The airplane did not. As this video clearly shows, airplanes are replaceable, people are not.
This First Takes episode is part of COPA’s ongoing mission to create better, safer pilots by thoughtfully examining real-world Cirrus accidents and incidents. Whether you fly a Cirrus SR20, SR22, or SF50, this is must-watch safety content.
