Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) has been in use for decades, but today the industry is seeing rapid growth with nearly 600 projects in various stages of operation and development globally. With this growth, USEA is undertaking a four-part educational series on the basics of CCUS.
Part Three of our series focuses on the final destination of captured carbon including underground storage and for use in enhanced oil recovery. This session will explore the geologic formations that safely store CO2, the differences between EPA-designated well classes including Classes II and VI, and how these wells are designed and regulated to protect underground sources of drinking water. Attendees will learn how CO2 behaves over time once injected, what “primacy” means for state versus federal oversight, and how safety is ensured throughout the lifecycle of a storage site. This webinar will provide a clear, practical understanding of how secure, long-term storage or utilization underpins the success of CCUS projects.
