Extraordinary League Book Club, "The Conversation"

Описание: Extraordinary League Non-Profit Organization's Book Club on Hill Harper's, "The Conversation". The books will range from relationship topics, to political issues, and other life concerns. The purpose of the book club meetings is to expose other young, professionals to content outside of their profession. The discussion, though focused on the book, will be designed to connect to our personal and daily lives, as well as our Intellectual Tuesday conversations.

Inspired by the strength and success of the marriage of his college friend, Barack Obama, bestselling author Hill Harper tackles the crisis in African-American relationships in his first book for adults. He opens a dialogue on relationship essentials including:
• the dating scene
• the myth that there are no mature, single, black male professionals
• how women can let go of the "heaviness" they sometimes attach to dating
• how men can break the "player" cycle
• the difference between sex and intimacy
• bridging the communication gap and more

Harper is attempting to broaden the coupling discussion with his new book, "The Conversation: How Black Men and Women Can Build Loving, Trusting Relationships," which he views as a "dialogue across the barricades that men and women have erected to protect themselves from each other." And in the first line of the guide, he puts forth his disclaimer: "I am in no way representing myself as an expert in relationships, but rather as a man on a journey, attempting to figure it all out for myself."

[Though the book is still a "guide to dating"] Harper does inject his personal fears, relationship problems, and baggage, to make the conversation a little more intimate, which helps to show that no matter who we are, we all need to take responsibility for our roles in unhealthy relationship choices. There are eyebrow-raising dialogues throughout where Harper talks candidly to Black men and women. Sadly, their thoughts sometimes reveal the stereotypical, close-minded views that many of us hold about the opposite sex. There is a lot of work to be done.
