Cass Scenic Railroad is part of the West Virginia State Park system. It includes the logging company town, company store, lumber mill and the 11 miles of logging railroad up Back Allegheny Mountain.
This is the Bald Knob train, which runs the full 22 mile trip to the top of the mountain meeting the Whittaker train at the first Switchback. Shay 5 was having a hard time getting the heavy fall foliage train up here. Shay #5 is the most historic piece here at Cass. It was built new in 1905 for Cass and saw lumber hauling service here for decades before Cass became a tourist attraction. Built new in 1905 and having never left, Shay 5 has been climbing this mountain for 120 years!
