Madonna's son Rocco Ritchie hosts an art exhibition at his mother's Los Angeles hair shop.
Rocco, who has exhibited his paintings in London before under the alias "Rhed," reportedly has a new display in the United States.
The news that Rocco Ritchie, 22-year-old son of Madonna and Guy Ritchie, had been painting under the name "Rhed" came as quite a shock to the public. His current Instagram handle is @maisonrhed, and according to Richard Eden of the Daily Mail, he recently had an exhibition in Los Angeles. Andy LeCompte, the man who cuts Madonna's hair, is the owner of a salon in Hollywood where his work is on display.
Multiple exhibitions at the Tanya Baxter Contemporary gallery in Chelsea, west London, have solidified Ritchie's reputation as a leading expressionist painter. He uses rich oils and gestural brushwork to depict the human figure. A lot of people attribute his penchant for secrecy to being influenced by artists like Banksy. The message of his paintings is that "there is beauty in the battle of life," and he has been quoted as claiming that he finds more beauty in adversity than in prosperity. He has claimed that he is "fascinated by the inner and exterior worlds, especially where they meet." According to the Mail, he also recently spoke on the influence of his "creative family" upbringing by Madonna and Guy Ritchie on his artistic development.
The creative individual rejected the opportunities his parents could have provided and instead presented himself under an assumed name. Typically, the price of one of his paintings is anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. They were reportedly on the market for $24,000 before Page Six's discovery of Rocco's identity. His mom and dad saw his exhibition at the King's Road gallery back in the summer. The media gave it a lot of play, but the general population was in the dark about who was behind it. Guests included Guy and Jacqui Ainsley, Madonna and her 27-year-old boyfriend Ahlamalik Williams, and the Williams' adoptive children Mercy and David. A private dinner honoring his work was held at Miami Beach in conjunction with Art Basel.
Several positive reviews have been written about Ritchie's work, including one from Mervyn Davies, a former chair of the Royal Academy, who likened his style to that of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Banksy. The Guardian quoted Davies as saying, "Good painters are those who can turn energy into something beautiful that speaks to the sight." "Anyone may be a painter, but the main thing is to make people think and feel," Davies added.
