My first time on a ScotRail Inter7City set since January 2023 was on set HA10 with power cars 43182 and 43130 on the 1A39 1041 from Glasgow Queen Stree to Aberdeen calling at Stirling, Perth, Dundee, Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Carnoustie, Arbroath, Montrose, Laurencekirk, Stonehaven, Portlethen and Aberdeen. At Broughty Ferry, Monifieth and Portlethen, the conductor is only allowed to open the door next to the accessible toilet in Coach B. Upgrading to first class onboard these sets is £15. Glasgow Queen Street is the only station on the ScotRail network (that I know of) where they use RA dispatch where the guard waves a green flag rather than doing 2 on the buzzer. The guard can still do 2 on the buzzer at Glasgow Queen Street but only when needed. This does not apply to any 318, 320 or 334 operated route as the 318s, 320s and 334s all have driver operation throughout. Only these 380 and 385 routes are guard operated while others have driver operation throughout:
Edinburgh to Dunbar, Dunblane, Glasgow Central, Glasgow Queen Street and North Berwick
Glasgow Central to Barrhead (and East Kilbride once the East Kilbride branch is electrified).
Glasgow Queen Street to Falkirk Grahamston, Cumbernauld and Alloa.
On the 380s, the guard opens and closes the doors.
On the 385s, the driver opens the doors and the guard closes the doors.
Although the 170s, 380s and 385s have doors controls in the cab, the guard has to use the saloon.
The 318s, 320s and 334s only have door controls in the cab and not in the saloon which is also why they all have driver only operation. This was also the case on the 314s before they were phased out.
On the 153s, 156s and 158s, there isn't even a cab door.
On the Inter7City sets, there is no dedicated guards compartment like on other HST sets such as the GWR Castle Sets for example. My main guess is that the guard gains access by going into a Class 43 cab once the driver shuts the engines off and then making their way through the power car then once the guard releases the doors, the driver turns the engines back on. Either that or the guard gains access by using the emergency door release to open one of the passenger doors before resetting the emergency door release.
