Jessie Elliott, FRCS, PhD, Trinity St. James's Cancer Institute, Dublin, Ireland, discusses two focus areas in long-term quality of life after esophageal and gastric cancer surgery: nutritional impact and surveillance. The effect of surgery on gastrointestinal physiology and eating habits is explored, with a focus on the exaggerated gut hormone response, specifically glucagon-like peptide 1. The second area of focus is the surveillance of patients after treatment to identify potential cancer recurrence. Dr Elliott highlights the SANG2 trial, an international multicentre clinical trial, that explores different intensities of surveillance after treatment completion. The trial aims to assess the impact of intensive follow-up on oncological outcomes while considering the potential negative impact on quality of life.
