Today, we’re heading just outside Washington, D.C., to visit one of the most historic spots in the country—Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. I’ll take you through how to get there, what to expect, and some of the key highlights of this iconic estate.
Getting to Mount Vernon from Washington D.C. is super simple using public transportation. from any DC station hop on the Yellow Metro line and ride it to the last stop on the line, Huntington Station. From there, transfer to the Fairfax Connector bus—route 101—which will drop you off across the street from the entrance to Mount Vernon. The whole trip takes around an hour depending on wait times. it’s a convenient, affordable way to make the journey if you don’t want to drive. It sounds intimidating but with just one transfer and efficient trains and busses taking public transportation to Mt. Vernon is extremely simple.
Of course, If you’d rather drive, parking is free and plentiful at Mount Vernon, so it’s a good option if you’re coming with a group or just want more flexibility.
Once you arrive, general admission tickets cost around 28 dollars for adults, 11 dollars for kids. This gets you access to the mansion, gardens, farm, and museums. You’ll also get a free audio guide, which you can use to explore at your own pace. Just tap your guide against the numerous audio boxes and you’ll learn details about each area of the estate.
The gardens here are a must-see. Washington personally oversaw their design, and they’ve been carefully maintained to reflect his vision. You’ll find a variety of plants, trees, and flowers that were typical of the time. The upper garden was largely ornamental with the lower garden focusing on eatables like herbs and vegetables.
As you walk through the grounds, you’ll see various original and reconstructed structures, including the blacksmith shop, Washington’s stable, slave quarters, and the kitchen. Each building gives you a real sense of daily life at Mount Vernon during Washington’s time. You can step inside many of the buildings and learn how each played a role in the running of the estate.
Mount Vernon is located on the shore of the Potomac River. there are several walking trails that lead you through the estate’s more natural areas. These paths take you along the river’s edge and through Washington’s forest. there are some great spots to pause and snap a photo or to just take in the view. The trails are easy to follow and they’re a great way to get a feel for the land that Washington loved.
The farm here is a working part of the estate and has been restored to show how Washington experimented with various farming techniques. There’s a demonstration of 18th-century farming methods, plus you can see livestock like sheep and horses grazing in the fields.
Washington’s final resting place is here on the grounds, in a tomb that’s simple but meaningful. Nearby is a memorial to the enslaved people who lived and worked at Mount Vernon, recognizing their contributions to the estate’s history. It’s a quiet space for reflection.
To see the inside of the mansion, you’ll need a timed entry ticket. Which is included in general admission. Be sure to check your ticket time, as there’s usually a bit of a wait. But don’t worry—the line moves quickly, and once you’re inside, it’s well worth it.
