From the Golden Age of British Dance Bands comes a selection of six recordings from 1931. We start with the radio band of Jack Payne at the height of his BBC fame and a typically energetic performance by the 1931 BBC Dance Orchestra. Recent additions to the line-up, Jack Jackson (trumpet) and Eric Siday (violin), are given a chance to shine. Next in our selection comes an early recording by Harry Roy and his RKOlians. The personnel which would help propel Harry as a top of the bill attraction was already making up much of the band, and on this recording they already show great promise with some fine solo work. Next we have an early rumba or, as the record label presents it, a “rhythm foxtrot”. “The Peanut Vendor” was a hit, though perhaps not quite as significant as the music publisher’s advertising copy claimed it to be. The band of Marius B.Winter, a society bandleader, tackles it with apparent relish. Our fourth number, “Hello, Beautiful”, is performed by a leading provincial band of the time, and one which was getting noticed through its regular BBC broadcasts, then live from the Midland Hotel in Manchester where this recording was made by Decca engineers on a Sunday. Henry Hall, like Harry Roy, was on his way to becoming one of the top bandleaders of the 1930s. That would never be an accolade awarded to Harry Bidgood, who remained in the background, working hard, producing hundreds of records which in the late 1920s must have sold well. After leaving Vocalion’s employ, Harry would lead a highly successful and long-running variety act (an accordion band), but under another name – Primo Scala. The leading show band of Jack Hylton closes our programme with a tango, “O Cara Mia”. The accordion is used effectively in a good arrangement of the number, which is well sung by Pat O’Malley.

Recorded in 1931 for the Columbia, Broadcast, Broadcast Twelve, Decca and Zonophone labels, these recordings are long out-of-copyright.
