In the Western Ghats region, the Elephant Pongal festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Kozhikamuthi Elephant Camp near Topslip, under the Ulandhi forest range of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve near Pollachi.
A total of 24 elephants, including trained Kumki elephants, are being maintained at this camp. As a mark of gratitude to the elephants that support forest protection and various forest department operations, the Elephant Pongal festival is celebrated every year.
During this year’s celebrations, the elephants were bathed, decorated with kumkum on their foreheads, and adorned with garlands. Earlier, the sight of the elephants raising their trunks and bowing in front of the Ganesha shrine deeply moved the visitors.
Later, tribal communities prepared Pongal in traditional clay pots and offered it to the Sun God. The elephants were then fed with their favorite foods such as sugarcane, bananas, horse gram, ragi, and cooked rice.
Tourists from various districts of Tamil Nadu participated in the festival and expressed their happiness.
“Just like Bhogi Pongal and Mattu Pongal, celebrating Pongal for elephants is a unique experience. Seeing more than 20 elephants at one place gives us immense joy,” said the visitors.
