What Elements Do You Need to Make Your Own Hydroponic Solution?
Macronutrients
In order to thrive and grow healthily, plants need macronutrients, which are elements that come in large amounts. These include the following:
Calcium
Carbon
Hydrogen
Magnesium
Nitrogen
Oxygen
Phosphorus
Potassium
Sulfur
Make sure that your macronutrient solution contains all the elements mentioned above. Otherwise, your hydroponic formula will be ineffective, leaving your plants with stunted growth, discoloured leaves, and drooping stems. Having an effective hydroponic nutrient base that works will provide your plants and vegetables with everything they need for growth and strength.
Micronutrients
Aside from macronutrients, plants also require elements in small amounts to help them survive. These are called micronutrients, and each element below should be present in the natural plant booster:
Boron
Chlorine
Cobalt
Copper
Iron
Manganese
Molybdenum
Zinc

Typical 3-part fertilizers include NPK, CaNO3, and MgSO4
The most common way to fertilize a hydroponic system uses a 3-part fertilizer mixed into micronutrient.
1) N-P-K mix
This is the basic mix that contains three of the most plentiful nutrients. There are different formulas for different crops; for example, lettuce, tomato, and strawberry formulas.

4-18-38 Analysis
Total Nitrogen (N) 3.5% Nitrate Nitrogen 0.5% Ammoniacal Nitrogen 4%
Available Phosphate (P2O5) 18%
Soluble Potash (K2O) 38%
Magnesium (Mg) (Total) 0.50%
Water Soluble Magnesium (Mg) 0.50%
Boron (B) 0.20%
Copper (Cu) 0.05%
Chelated Copper (Cu) 0.05%
Iron (Fe) 0.40%
Chelated Iron (Fe) 0.40%
Manganese (Mn) 0.20%
Chelated Manganese (Mn) 0.20%
Molybdenum (Mo 0.01%
Zinc (Zn) 0.05% Chelated Zinc (Zn) 0.05

2) Calcium nitrate, CaNO3.
This provides calcium and additional nitrates to your plants. Since calcium doesn’t really play nice with the next part, magnesium sulfate, it bunks with NPK in stock solutions. (Calcium and magnesium sulfate are the culprits involved in precipitation.)

3) Magnesium sulfate, MgSO4.
(Also called Epsom salt.) This is used to supplement magnesium and sulfur, and is mixed and stored by itself.

When these 3 parts are kept as stock solutions (either for manual addition or for automated dosing), they are kept as a Stock A (NPK and CaNO3) and a Stock B (MgSO4), often alongside a pH adjustor.

How Should You Make the Hydroponic Formula?
1. Buy a standard water-soluble fertilizer that contains the micronutrients, this will be the base of your DIY fertilizer.
2. Add 4-18-38 formula 2.5 ml of the fertiliser and calcium nitrate 2.5 ml to every 5 lit of water, this measurement has been worked out for optimal success.
3. Stir the mixture well, by doing this you will ensure all of the nutrients are fully combined.
4. Add 1.3 ml of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate )to every 5 lit of water.
5. Add micronutrient 1.25 ml of every 5 lit of water
6. Mix the solution well. The formula is now ready to use!
Test the Water’s pH Level Used in the Formula
The pH level of the water in your hydroponic formula plays a major role in the growth of your plants. Therefore, to make sure that your plants grow in excellent condition, you should consider the water’s pH level. To do this, use a pH test kit and keep the water’s pH level between 5.0 and 6.5 Make necessary changes to the water using a pH adjusting kit.
Conclusion
To sum it all up, having a proper nutrient solution is essential to the growth of your plants, especially if you are building a hydroponic garden. This will help ensure that your plants are provided with all the essential nutrients, minerals, and other elements they need. It may seem like a daunting task but we are confident you will find yourself enjoying the process once you start, it feels great seeing something you have put time and effort into growing and blooming.
While you can easily buy ready-made organic plant food, you may consider mixing up your own hydroponic solution to cut down on your overall costs. Not only that but making your own hydroponic fertilizer gives you a feeling of achievement.
Contrary to popular belief, making your own hydroponic formula from readily available components is fast and easy. This homemade formula allows you to control the nutrients your plants receive, aiding in their development. You can develop your own formulas based on the plants, fruits and vegetables you plan to grow, adjusting your recipe based on what works for you.
