STORYLINE:
Hezbollah rockets injured at least five people in Israel on Saturday afternoon after a rocket-free morning, medics said.
A direct hit on a house in Amirim, a northern Israel community, injured two people who were hit by shrapnel. Another strike in the northern town of Kiryat Shmona injured three people.
By mid-afternoon, the army reported 20 rocket strikes on Israel. Hezbollah had been averaging nearly 200 hits each day during its conflict with Israel.
The Israeli army said Saturday it had destroyed several Hezbollah rocket launchers and killed more than 40 guerrillas on Friday.
Israel announced it had nearly tripled the number of troops operating in southern Lebanon - to around 30,000 - just as members of the U.N. Security Council agreed on a cease-fire deal in New York.
Israeli army helicopters were seen landing at the Rambam hospital in Haifa on Saturday, bringing injured soldiers from Lebanon.
On Saturday the army said one of its soldiers was killed in fighting on Friday, bringing the toll of military casualties since fighting started on July 12 to 85.
Israeli military correspondents reported at least 30 Hezbollah fighters were killed in the advance and Israeli forces suffered casualties, but specific figures were not immediately given.
In northern Israel tanks were filmed shelling Hezbollah positions across the border.
Earlier this week the Israeli Security Cabinet had approved the wider offensive, up to Lebanon's Litani River, about 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the border, or about twice the territory it controls now.
Olmert had frozen the campaign for two days to allow more time for diplomacy, but on Friday instructed the military to go ahead.
Under the cease-fire deal, approved by the U.N. Security Council early Saturday, some 15,000 U.N. peacekeepers would deploy along the Israel-Lebanon border, along with an equal number of Lebanese troops.
