ABOUT SILENT SURPLUS
Thank you for watching Silent Surplus.
I would like my channel to reflect the voiceless struggle of children with autism while maintaining an educational and calming overtone.
I have chosen the name "Silent Surplus" for two reasons. Military related subjects such as history, reenacting, and surplus equipment will be the overall theme on this channel. But many of my videos will also be silent in solidarity with my son, Roan, who is diagnosed with autism and a communication disorder.
Through frequent and extensive speech therapy sessions, Roan has developed echolalia and can repeat some short sentences with coaching and guidance.
Depending on the video, you might hear me speak on rare occasions, but for the most part, this channel is for his voice. In fact, it is my hope that this will become a good father and son project. An outlet for my hobby and his speech development.
The Silent Surplus Motto: Calm, Focused, Safe. Please remember to love and support those with autism.

LET’S SHOOT 20!
This will be a simple series where I take a military surplus firearm to the range and shoot 20 rounds. Five rounds at 25 yards, five rounds at 50 yards, five rounds at 100 yards, and five rounds at 200 yards. Relaxing and calming music will play in the background as my son, Roan, narrates and practices his speech therapy. Very little history will be taught in this series. The goal here is entertainment, marksmanship, and to showcase Roan’s progress with communication.
IN THIS EPISODE
We will be shooting a Chilean Model 1912 Mauser made by Steyr in Austria. This example was rechambered from its original 7x57mm Mauser cartridge to the 7.62x51 NATO cartridge, sometime in the 1960s. This was a Chilean military arsenal conversion to conform their ammunition reserves to their new NATO allies. After the cartridge conversion, Chile also shortened many of these rifles into carbines and designated them as the Model 1912-61. Interestingly enough, the example we are shooting in this episode was not shortened. It retains its original full length barrel and stock.
