Central to this skill is the fact that you can only steer a motorcycle by what’s commonly labeled “counter steering.” Some might call it by different names, but from a physics standpoint, there is no other method of steering a two-wheeled vehicle, whether you’re moving slowly through a parking lot or riding on the highway.

What Do We Mean by “Counter Steering”?

It refers to the moment when you press on the inside handlebar, causing the front wheel to briefly point opposite the direction you want to go. This action forces the motorcycle to lean toward the actual turn direction you intend. It might be subtle if you’re going slowly, but the principle remains the same whether you’re maneuvering in tight spaces or executing quick swerves to avoid hazards.

Why Is This Important for Evasive Maneuvers?
1. Instant Lean Initiation
• A swift push on the inside handlebar immediately tips the bike over into the lean you need to swerve around an obstacle or unexpected threat.
• This quick reaction time can be the difference between a near-miss and a collision.
2. Controlling the Lean Angle
• Once the bike is leaning, you must allow the handlebars to turn slightly in the direction of the lean so the bike can complete the maneuver.
• Fighting the bar or trying to force a different steering input will reduce the effectiveness of your evasive move.
3. Common Misconceptions
• Some people refer to “direct steering” at very slow speeds, but a microscopic counter steer still happens whenever you lean the bike at all.
• There truly is no separate method—the same principle is always at work, no matter how slowly or quickly you’re moving.

How to Practice Counter Evasive Maneuvers
• Safe Environment: Start in a wide, open area free of traffic.
• Progressive Drills: Begin by practicing gentle bar inputs and feeling the bike lean under you. Gradually increase the intensity of your inputs to simulate a real swerve.
• Look Where You Want to Go: Don’t focus on the object you’re avoiding—keep your gaze on your escape route or the clear path ahead.
• Mind Your Speed & Balance: As you push the bar, maintain balanced throttle control and be prepared to smoothly straighten up once you’ve cleared the hazard.
