The question about what should be applied to burn wounds. So if you feel comfortable enough that your child has a small enough burn that the pain is well enough controlled and it's in an area that you feel comfortable that you can put a dressing, we suggest this most simple cost effective and basic approach and that would include washing the area with soap and water just gently to make sure that the area is clean once a day. Applying a clear, colorless, odorless type of ointment such as polysporin. If you don't have a polysporin ointment, you could apply something such as Vaseline petroleum, which is just clear you put a small amount on the wound just enough to cover it so that something will not stick to it. We suggest a gauze because sometimes there will be fluid coming off the wound, but something that is nonstick and a light wrap over it.

We typically use a water-based moisturizer in order to add more moisture to the skin. We tend to stay away from an oil-based product as it doesn't add moisture into the skin. We suggest that the dressing be changed probably every other day and sometimes for the first few days every day just so that it doesn't stick and that the area is washed with soap and water in between just to keep it comfortable.

The problem with most of the even these simple kinds of dressings are that burns are painful and in order to convince children to get these changed you have to provide something often for pain relief and if you find that your anti-inflammatory is really not enough and they need more pain control, again that's a time where maybe rather than doing the dressing yourself you might want to get a little bit more professional help. Simple, easy, cheap and readily available creams and ointments we do suggest that people avoid some of the remedies and expensive creams that can be sold. Simple and cheap is usually the best.
