To kiya ye tai hai
تو کیا یہ طے ہے کہ اب عمر بھر نہیں ملنا
Chat GPT translates the first couplet:
“So, is it settled then — that we'll never meet again for the rest of our lives?
Then what's the point of this life, if it's not to be with you?"
A ghazal penned by my dear friend Saroor Barabankvi beautifully exemplifies the inherent grace and expressive power of the Urdu language. The opening line, "To kya ye tay hai," employs a simple yet profound proverb that captures a deep emotional truth with remarkable ease and clarity. This first misra sets the tone, suggesting a finality in a relationship — a quiet resignation. The second misra then seamlessly follows, expressing the inevitable emotional consequence of that decision, deepening the impact. Together, these lines reflect how Urdu poetry can say so much with so little — combining elegance, emotion, and wisdom in just a few words.
I composed this ghazal in loving memory of my dear friend Saroor Bhai, shortly after his passing in 1980. It was a deeply emotional piece for me, born out of both grief and reverence. Some time later, my friend Sahira Kazmi heard the ghazal and felt it would perfectly complement her television serial Hawwa Ki Beti. She requested to use it as the original soundtrack, and I was honoured by her choice.
The ghazal was originally sung by the immensely talented Gul Bahar Bano, whose masterful rendition brought the composition to life. Her nuanced vocal expression earned praise not only from my fellow musicians but also from connoisseurs of music, who appreciated both the melody and the sentiment behind the work.
The version I am now sharing with you features the gifted Simal Nafees, whose heartfelt interpretation brings a new emotional depth to the piece. For this rendition, I made a deliberate change in the rhythmic cycle, a shift I believe allows Simal greater expressive freedom. This subtle alteration in tempo and phrasing has opened up space for her to more fully inhabit the words and display the full range of her vocal artistry.
I am sure you will enjoy it.
