Iceland moves with urgency to join in the EU, but in Brussels there is some scepticism

Iceland's prime minister said today the country will hold a referendum on joining the EU in the next few months. But it's important to keep in mind that Iceland is practically in the EU already, just without voting rights. Norway and Iceland created the EEA in the 1990s to emulate EU membership.
The other thing to keep in mind is that Iceland already started the process to join the EU in 2008 after the country's banking crisis, but then cancelled the bid in 2013 after their economy recovered while the euro crisis was roiling.
Just like with the UK, the EU doesn't want to waste time and money on accession negotiations that are then going to be reversed by a future government. So Brussels will want to see some real evidence that the public is going to stick with it and vote to join in a second referendum after negotiations conclude.
