Calliope Arts Foundation presents Restoration Conversations at Villa Il Palmerino, with Linda Falcone.
Il Palmerino, in Florence, is a fourteenth-century watchtower turned villa and cultural association. Resident artists from all over the world do their artistic research here. It was once home to English painter Lola Costa, who came to Il Palmerino in 1935, with her painter husband Federigo Angeli. Influenced by her training in Paris in the 1920s, Lola Costa benefited and broke free from Angeli’s more academic style.
Il Palmerino was also home to English author Vernon Lee, who held her famous literary salon at the villa, which welcomed the likes of Henry James, Edith Wharton and Virginia Woolf. Costa’s granddaughter, Federica Parretti, is Il Palmerino Cultural Association President, who continues to manage the estate with her family. In this episode, Restoration Conversations presenter Linda Falcone speaks to Parretti about Costa and Lee, and the Florentine estate’s role in creating a ‘garden of one’s own’, a creative space for generations of women.
Restoration Conversations is produced and sponsored by the Calliope Arts Foundation, whose mission is to bring women’s achievements to the fore in all fields.
This episode is filmed by Cinestudio Italy, with montage by Olga Makarova. It forms part of a larger 3-year programme: “The Garden Project: Early Women Expats and Artists of Today”, organised by Calliope Arts and Il Palmerino Cultural Association, in collaboration with the British Institute of Florence.
