In 2025, the Basic Needs project successfully reached the most socially vulnerable individuals in frontline areas. This includes elderly people, lonely grandmothers and grandfathers, those with serious illnesses, and individuals with disabilities. It also supports single parents, mothers, guardians, pregnant women, and families with children under three years old, as well as large families.
The Basic Needs project plays a vital role in assisting these individuals and demonstrates its effectiveness and necessity.
“I am very grateful to your organization; your help meant a lot to me!” says Ms. Nadiya from the village of Slatine in the Derhachi community of the Kharkiv region, fondly recalling how a medical grant helped her overcome cancer. Ms. Laura from Malaya Danilivka, of the Malodanilivska community, reflects on her improved living conditions as she shows her home, which was destroyed by Russian troops: “Caritas has helped us significantly—we already have plans and know what to buy to start settling down and living again.”
Today, the Caritas Kharkiv team shares stories about people in need and the challenges they face. These stories are more powerful than words alone, highlighting the undeniable importance of external support for the heroes depicted in the film.
The Basic Needs project, which supports and provides for particularly vulnerable people affected by the war living within 0-50 km of the contact line in southern and eastern Ukraine, is implemented in partnership with Caritas Ukraine and is funded by Caritas Deutschland (Caritas Germany) and the Auswärtiges Amt (German Foreign Office).
