Ikkis is the powerful and inspiring true story of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, one of India’s youngest Param Vir Chakra awardees and a legendary hero of the 1971 India–Pakistan War.

Born on 14 October 1950 into a distinguished military family, Arun Khetarpal was the son of Brigadier Madan Lal Khetarpal. Discipline, courage, and service to the nation shaped his childhood. After completing his schooling at Lawrence School, Sanawar, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) and later the Indian Military Academy (IMA), where he earned a reputation for leadership, determination, and fearlessness.

In June 1971, Arun Khetarpal was commissioned into the elite 17 Poona Horse, an armoured regiment of the Indian Army. Just six months later, he was thrust into history during the Battle of Basantar, one of the most decisive tank battles of the Indo-Pak War of 1971.

Facing heavily fortified Pakistani positions and deadly minefields, Indian armoured units pushed forward under extreme enemy fire. During the battle, 2nd Lt Arun Khetarpal commanded a Centurion tank and destroyed multiple enemy Patton tanks at close range. Even after his tank was hit and he was critically wounded, he refused repeated orders to withdraw, choosing instead to continue fighting and protect his comrades.

His final radio transmission—calm, clear, and fearless—has since become a symbol of ultimate sacrifice and soldier’s honour in Indian military history. Fighting till his last breath at just 21 years of age, Arun Khetarpal laid down his life for the nation.

For his unmatched bravery, leadership, and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded India’s highest wartime gallantry award — the Param Vir Chakra.

This video also explores the deeply emotional moment in 2001, when his father met the Pakistani Brigadier who had commanded the tank unit opposing Arun during the Battle of Basantar—proving that courage and humanity transcend borders.
