Concrete and plaster reinforcement by multiple leno fabrics
Leno fabrics are commonly used reinforcement materials in the building sector, mostly applied for plaster. The mesh size of these fabrics is limited to about 1 cm due to the relatively small shifting resistance of the fabric which is caused by the limitation in warp yarn twists to 180°. A bigger mesh size would allow the usage of less expensive concrete with bigger grain size. Additionally, the production speed of such technologies is quite low (about 200 rpm). These points prevent the usage of glass fiber reinforced building materials in many applications.
Within the cooperation project ‘TechnoLeno’ of Gebr. Klöcker GmbH and the Institute for Textile Engineering (ITA) of the RWTH Aachen University a new weaving technology was developed which allows the introduction of multiple warp yarn twists. This new weaving loom is based on propeller units which are installed over the whole weaving width. The propeller units are capable of introducing a 360° warp yarn twist at 450 rpm machine speed. Several samples (AR-glass, 2400 tex) with a mesh size of 4 cm with different numbers of warp yarn twists have been produced. The reinforcement effect was tested on concrete samples in a 3 point bending test. Additionally, the shifting resistance of these fabrics was tested in a fiber pull out experiment. The experiments show that a higher number of twists significantly increases the reinforcement effect which strongly reduces the construction and reinforcement material required.
