🌊 What the Kabani River Is
• The Kabani River is one of the major rivers originating in the Wayanad district of Kerala.
• It’s one of the few east-flowing rivers in Kerala, meaning unlike most rivers in the state that flow west to the Arabian Sea, Kabani flows eastward into another major river.
• The river begins at the confluence of the Panamaram River and Mananthavady River in Wayanad.
🏞️ Geography & Course
• After originating in Wayanad, it flows eastward into Karnataka.
• It eventually joins the Cauvery (Kaveri) River at Tirumakudal Narsipur in Karnataka.
• Along its course, several smaller streams and tributaries such as the Thirunelli River, Panamaram River, and Mananthavady River feed into it.
🏞️ Scenic & Cultural Importance in Wayanad
• In Wayanad, the river contributes to the lush landscapes and valleys, and places like Kolavally are known for scenic river views.
• The river basin supports local agriculture and wildlife habitats.
• Near the river basin lies Kuruvadweep (Kuruva Island), a popular nature and picnic spot surrounded by river waters.
🌦️ Water Levels & Issues
• There have been efforts to restore water flow in the Kabani in Wayanad during droughts (for example, check-dams built and water released from Karapuzha Dam to recharge it).
• Historically, parts of the river in Wayanad have dried up during severe dry seasons, affecting farming and local water supply.
🏞️ Downstream Importance
• Once in Karnataka, the Kabani feeds into the Kabini Reservoir, a significant water body known for wildlife and fertile grasslands.
• The river’s water supports agriculture, drinking water supply, and ecosystems downstream before joining the Cauvery.
