Who are the Poe Sisters & What is the Forest Temple?

Nestled deep within the Lost Woods is the Forest Temple, a place overgrown and forgotten. Everyone remembers this place, and the four poes you'll find inside, known as the Poe Sisters.

We eventually come here to awaken the forest sage, Saria, but the game doesn't give us much to go on other than that.

So what was the Forest Temple, and who were the Poe Sisters?
