Communities of faith are hubs where older adults feel safe, valued and may escape social isolation. Faith and lay leaders entrusted with their spiritual care are, more often than not, first responders in instances when the well-being of older adults is at risk. To better equip faith-affiliated caregivers with the necessary insights, skills and resources to minister to this vulnerable sector, the San Francisco Interfaith Council (SFIC), in collaboration with the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services (DAS) and the Institute on Aging (IOA), supported by a grant from the Metta Fund, offers this six-week online training series entitled, "Empowering Older Adults." This week's training session entitled, "Elder Abuse Prevention" will be led by Glen Fishman, Program Development Specialist for Elder Abuse Prevention at the Institute on Aging (IOA). The two-fold focus of this presentation will be 1) To increase the ability to recognize the warning signs of elder abuse and neglect, as well as the prevalence of abuse; and 2) To increase the understanding of San Francisco's Adult Protective Services Department and California's Elder Abuse mandated reporting requirements.
