This public domain hymn was reportedly Fanny Crosby’s favorite. She wrote over 800 songs, some of which are still sung today. A short historical backstory: Fanny was living in a poor tenement building near the Bowery Mission in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, New York City, where she ministered among the poor and spoke publicly to people who needed to hear her testimony of God’s saving grace. Living in this environment she may have felt that she was in a kind of wilderness. The song lyrics hark back to Psalm 27;5; and also remind of the experience of Moses when God allowed him to see His glory in the cleft of the mountain rock, shaded by the protective covering of His hand.
Being raised in a church environment from an early age, this became a familiar hymn to me, largely because my father sometimes sang it as a solo. Recognition for the musical melody for this song is attributed to William J. Kirkpatrick, who reportedly had visited Fanny with a new tune he’d just written that needed suitable words.
