Built in 1915 the Stanley Schoolhouse was named after Henry Stanley, a nearby landowner. This is the 3rd school constructed at this location. The first school was built of logs followed by a wooden frame schoolhouse that was eventually burnt down by an arsonist. The school grounds eventually featured an outhouse, a water pump and a school yard for recess. In the 1785 land ordinance, the 16th section of each township in the state was designated as a site for a school. However in 1907 the state legislature closed all schools with fewer than 12 students. Between 1890 and 1920, 4,000 one room school houses were closed in Indiana. The Stanley schoolhouse remained open until 1954.
