Iranian backed Hezbollah guerrillas and Israeli forces traded artillery and rocket fire Thursday in south east Lebanon.

The flare-up followed three hit and run guerrilla forays on outposts manned by the Israeli-backed South Lebanon Army near the edge of the eastern sector of the Israel's self-proclaimed "security zone.

The Shiite Muslim extremist Hezbollah, or Party of God, claims the South Lebanon Army took direct hits in the early morning attacks by its guerrillas.

Israeli forces supporting the SLA struck back with mortar and tank fire, pounding the hills at Zommaraya and the adjacent hilltop positions of Ein Qenya and Zeghla.

The exchange raged for several hours although only one civilian was reported injured.

Offensives are mounted against Hezbollah guerrillas each time they enter the self styled security zone.

Hezbollah spearheads a war to dislodge Israel from south Lebanon, which Israel has occupied since 1985 to shield its northern towns from cross-border guerrilla attacks.

A total of 23 Israeli soldiers and 43 SLA militiamen were killed in fighting last year in south Lebanon, the last active Arab-Israeli war front.

44 guerrillas also were slain in the battles.
