Born in Seattle in 1922 as Solomon Krakovsky to Russian Jewish immigrants, Steven Hill developed a passion for theater early in life. After serving in the Naval Reserve during World War II, he began his acting career alongside Marlon Brando in A Flag is Born and made his film debut opposite Hedy Lamarr in A Lady Without Passport (1950). Throughout the 1950s and ’60s, he appeared in films like The Goddess and A Child Is Waiting, and became a frequent guest star on numerous television anthologies. His big break came with Mission: Impossible (1966), but his refusal to work on the Jewish Sabbath led to his dismissal after one season. He then left Hollywood for over a decade, focusing on real estate in New York.
Hill returned to acting in the late 1970s with the miniseries King (1978) and found steady work in the 1980s with films like Yentl, Raw Deal, and Running on Empty. His major comeback came in 1990 when, at age 68, he joined Law & Order as District Attorney Adam Schiff. Despite missing the pilot, he became a fan favorite, known for his courtroom scenes and quiet authority. Hill starred alongside Chris Noth, Sam Waterston, and S. Epatha Merkerson, earning two Emmy nominations before retiring in 2000. The cast paid tribute to him in a special farewell on Larry King Live, celebrating the legacy of a deeply respected actor.
